Southwest Manitoba Priority Place (SWMPP)- Environmental Conservation Gathering for Indigenous Communities
September 21, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Background
CM Indigenous Development Ltd. Is excited to partner with Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on workshops and other collaborative, on-the-ground action with Sioux Valley Dakota Nation and other interested communities whose traditional territories overlap the Southwest Manitoba Priority Place (SWMPP) project boundary. We hope to build new relationships, find partnership opportunities and engage communities in this ongoing initiative to deliver an Integrated Conservation Action Plan (ICAP) for the region that honours and incorporates socio-economic-cultural perspectives that is founded on a shared vision for the landscape and a spirit of collaboration and reconciliation. Outcomes of strategic public engagement and land management initiatives are expected to support Species at Risk and biodiversity overall.
Join us on September 21st, for a day of networking with other Indigenous communities, discuss environmental priorities, challenges, and learn about local Indigenous-lead conservation initiatives, tools, and resources available to communities.
Travel costs are covered for attendees located within the Southwest Manitoba Priority Place boundary. Elder honorariums are also available. Limited spaces. For details or to register, please contact: cheyenne.ironman@cminiconsulting.ca

Goal of the Gathering:
We aim to contribute to the above objectives by engaging with members, Elders, youth and community organizations of Indigenous communities within the Southwest Manitoba Priority Place in a 1-day Gathering with the aim of creating new relationships, and identifying collaborative opportunities for nature conservation. The intent is to ensure local knowledge and community priorities are the foundation of the conservation planning process, and discuss opportunities to partner on future conservation and community initiatives. Specific objectives of this workshop are:
- To engage Elders, community members, and youth to discuss priorities, identify local community values, visions, perspectives, and initiatives that are important for nature conservation in the area.
- To encourage knowledge-sharing efforts to enhance understanding of factors that affect conservation in local communities and how the SWMPP initiative might reflect their perspectives.
- To discuss conservation activities that would be mutually beneficial to local communities and Species at Risk in the area
